2025 Full Collection

In this page contains all the record of artworks I have done in 2025.

This year, I decided to restart my art journey and I spent half a year trying to find what i wanted to explore in art for myself as a future artist. I came into a conclusion in late 2025—colour vs. expression. Since, I put all my main works of that concept on single pages on the front. I, then, listed all the practice work during 2025 in this page.

Walking In Yarra Ranges
11” x 14”
Oil on canvas
Feb, 2025

Mao Zhixuan

On a road trip to Yarra Ranges National Park, I was surrounded by the colour of ferns, chirping from the birds, and wooden smell coming with breezes. The painting captured a lively image of coexistence between people and nature. It’s about grounding, exploring, and growth.

Away from the modern world, the character enjoys the empowerment of liberty and undefined chances of exploration. In the forest of greens, lives represent themselves in dotted colours blooming to be shown off. Their elite colours of their own. By then, it’s not only green can complete a whole forest park.

Mind is cleared.
Everything is settled.
I feel much more grounded,
When home is here.

Alfred Nicholas Gardens in Autumn
15.7” x 15.7”
Soft Pastel on Canvas
May 9, 2025

Mao Zhixuan

Walking in Alfred Nicholas Gardens again, this time is autumn. Leaves turned yellow, lying on the surface of the lake.

Today is very populated and the place seems flooded by numerous active conversions. While once I reached the side of the lake, seeing the bridge formed a full circle, I found where I can belong in the crowd.

Olinda 1
6.9” x 9.8”
Colour Pencil on Paper
2025

Mao Zhixuan

I used pental multi8, a japanese automatic coloured pencils, for this painting. I wanted to document the local scenery near where I was living in.

As the nature of this medium, it felt more like crayon then pencils, I could not get it blended so easily. Therefore, the result is raw at colour expressions.

Olinda 2
6.9” x 9.8”
Colour Pencil on Paper

Likewise, the colours are barely mixed. Without the overly complicated colour theories, each colour is presenting one information. For example, the brown for the deck. It is how we firstly perceive colour in the world, “sky is blue, grass is green, flower is red”. Simplicity in theory, more in story telling.

Olinda 3
6.9” x 9.8”
Colour Pencil on Paper
2025

Mao Zhixuan

Tea tins and an overloading amount of items overwhelm me during drawing. It makes the balance and differentiation between colours harder, especially when the variation is limited.

Olinda 4
6.9” x 9.8”
Colour Pencil on Paper

Mao Zhixuan

Final drawing of Olinda, the light balls caught my eyes. I like how the dot-like balls rhythm with circular wooden panel. Like cherries on the top. It is just fabulous life discoveries.

Graduation Dress
6.9” x 9.8”
Soft Pastel on Recycled Paper
2025

Mao Zhixuan

The texture of recycle paper is rough and not be able to rub. I documented the day I picked my graduation dress with my families. The store was pretty and I felt so too.

Scream
6” x 8”
Watercolour on Paper
2025

Mao Zhixuan

I only used quinacridone red from Daniel Smith palette, and the highligh pens. I wanted to create a horror scene with storytelling and imagination.
